Autism and CBD - Project CBD's article about the potential Therapeutic Effects of THC/CBD on ASD
Today is world Autism Awareness day, and we’d like to share some info on the condition and how CBD has been used by some to aid those with ASD. This info was brought to us by our friends at ProjectCBD.org in an article by Mary Biles.
First and foremost Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition that can cause atypical behavioral traits such as restricted interests, repetitive behaviors, and difficulties in interacting with others. Being that it’s a spectrum, individuals with Autism can display varying levels of severity, but with that being said there are still other emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms that many people with autism experience.
The cannabis plant, as complex as it is, has been reported to not only bring improvement to many of the behavioral difficulties associated with ASD, but also ease some of the associated comorbid conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease, sleep disorders, and epilepsy. In our own studies with Cardinal Glennon we’ve seen how the CBD oil we’ve created helps individuals with epilepsy.
A gene expression study on subjects with autism showed they all shared reduced CB1 receptor expression, which would effect the endocannabinoid system’s ability to maintain neurological homeostasis. Lower levels of endogenous cannabinoids were also noted in 93 autistic children, suggesting that some kind of endocannabinoid deficiency could be a contending factor.
